1) Last night I watched the movie Platoon. I always remember my father really enjoying it, but I never took the time to watch it. Well, it was quite the experience. Easily one of the most powerful movies I've seen in a long time. Hollywood and our culture in general has done a lot to romanticize WWII, but not so much the Vietnam War. I'm interested to learn more about Vietnam.
On an aside, two weeks ago I was listening to an interview with Ken Burns, a famous film producer, on WAMC. Similar to the effect Platoon had on me, this was one of the most powerful interviews I had heard in a long time. One fact that stayed with me was that he said people had a big misconception of WWII, calling it the Great War. With 60 million people dying, it was the largest death total of any war ever. Food for thought I guess.
2) Last weekend we went down to Long Island/NYC. My grandma is moving into an apartment, and we were helping her move stuff and setting up a garage sale. It's amazing how much people try to bargain during garage sales. We were practically giving this stuff away, and yet, people felt necessary to always try and get a deal.
New York was fun. I got to see a bunch of friends, and Sandy did too. It's funny that even though she is from Western Michigan, she can go to the city and see more friends than she has at home.
3) I make no lie about my love of burritos on this blog, and I've recently read that Chipotle is moving into the Capital District. The response is interesting, because some people love it, and others hate it. A lot of the haters don't like chains, and I can understand that. But for some reason, Chipotle seems like a different type of chain. The food seems fresher, than say Subway. However, I'm not sure how much I am going to go, unless they open one up in my neighborhood. There are just too many other places to eat around here.
On the subject of burritos, we went to trivia at Bombers this past Tuesday. It was a different type of trivia than I was used to. Six rounds rounds of 10 questions, as opposed to one question at a time. I liked the more question format.

I am anti-chain but pro Chipotle.
Here is the difference:
Chipotle uses happy meat (at least with their pork)
They actually cook food from scratch
And they toast their spices
Chipotle still suffers from:
Bad bland rice that can suck the good out of a burrito
Tortillas that are so highly caloric it's almost unimaginable (but mighty tasty)
All the same, I am very excited about the opening in the capital region. Beats the pants off Moe's and don't even get me started on the dreck that passes for a burrito at bombers.
